Dr Barlow attended medical school at the University of Melbourne, and trained at the Austin and Repatriation General Hospitals, St. Vincent’s Hospital, the Box Hill hospital in Melbourne, and the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He dual-trained in general medicine and cardiology, obtaining his FRACP in 1992.
He spent 3½ years undertaking sub-specialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and pacing in Canada. 2 years at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, and 18 months at the London Health Sciences Unit in Ontario, with Drs George Klein, Raymond Yee, Andrew Krahn and Allan Skanes.
These were high-volume specialist training centres, serving large areas and populations within Canada. After returning from Canada in 2000 he took up a full-time staff specialist position at the John Hunter Hospital. He was for many years the Director of Electrophysiology and Pacing at JHH. In 2018, he stepped down from that role to concentrate on his private practice.
